Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are a form of dental restoration that is used to protect weakened and damaged teeth. It is also used with dental bridges, dental implants, and cosmetic procedures. There are a variety of crowns available. The most common are gold, silver, and porcelain. For a more flawless dental restoration, porcelain crowns are best. They are color-matched with your teeth to discreetly correct the dental issue.

What is the procedure?

Dental crowns are custom made and are placed over an existing tooth or dental implant. When placing over an existing tooth, the tooth is shaped to receive the crown. It is then permanently attached with cement. Dental implants require an abutment that serves as the receiving tooth.

How should I care for my dental crown?

Dental crowns require normal dental care. Maintain proper dental hygiene to prevent issues like decay and gum disease. Dental crowns are known to last 5 to 15 years depending on maintenance. Avoid hard foods and biting on hard objects like pens and pencils. Dental crowns are sturdy but can get damaged if abused. Damaged and loose crowns are issues that need to be corrected right away. The underlying tooth or dental implant can get exposed to bacteria which can cause infection, tooth decay, and gum disease.

Will I experience pain?

The procedure is not painful but you may experience tooth sensitivity afterwards. Use a toothpaste that helps with teeth sensitivity to relieve the pain. If you notice discomfort when biting, contact us. The crown may be too high and needs to be readjusted.
