Denture Exams and Maintenance

Your dentures are an investment in your dental health that requires attention and proper care so that they perform optimally. Denture fit plays an important role in your health and overall well-being. Dental exams and maintenance ensure that your dentures function as intended.

  • Updated medical and dental history information
  • Oral cavity examination
  • Tissue and bone evaluation
  • Bite examination and denture stability
  • Clean and polish your denture
  • Review of oral hygiene

Medical and Dental History

To keep your dentures in proper condition, and to ensure that your dental health is sound, your dentist will need to update your medical and dental history periodically. This lets them know if any significant changes have occurred that could affect your oral health. There are a range of dental and medical conditions that can affect the fit of your dentures.

Oral Exam

Periodic oral examinations are helpful in helping your dentist detect oral problems like cancer and pre-cancerous lesions. Detecting these types of problems at an early stage is very helpful in achieving the best possible outcomes.

Tissue and Bone Evaluation

Even though you may wear dentures, the underlying bone and gum tissue can continue to change. This may mean that your dentures no longer fit properly. By periodically assessing the state of your gum tissues and underlying bone, your dentist can stay on top of problems that could affect the fit of your dentures.

Comfort, Fit, and Integrity of Your Set

Improperly fitting dentures can cause a range of problems, including:

  • Bite problems
  • Speech impediments
  • Soft tissue irritation

By checking the comfort, fit, and integrity of your dentures, your dentist can help you avoid complicated situations down the road. They can examine your dentures to look for signs of chips, cracks, and loose or broken teeth to provide solutions.

Summary of Initial Denture Exam and Consultation

Finally, after your dentist has gathered all needed information, they will go over the results of your dental exam. If any issues were detected, they can provide recommendations to correct the problems.

Maintenance

To protect the investment in your smile, proper denture care is critical. Caring for your set properly ensures that they remain clean and free from stains so that they look their best.

Be sure that you are removing and rinsing your set following meals and that you clean your mouth when you remove your set. You should be brushing your dentures once daily at a minimum with a soft-bristled brush.

It is important that you not allow your set to dry out, as this could alter their shape. When your set is not in your mouth, soak them according to the provided instructions.

You should always be rinsing your dentures before replacing them within your mouth, particularly if you use denture solution.
